Professionalization and management of Vegetable Supply Chain |
|
Fresh produce growers and street vendors do not have opportunities to band together into business, lobby and advocacy groups such as producer groups and marketing groups to take advantage of new economy that favors the big retail chains. Many barriers faced by small and marginalised stakeholders are also related to their small scale of operation. A group approach is the fastest means to do so. Groups have the potential to gain better terms of trade such as better sourcing prices, lower transaction costs access to training and other services.
After in depth and through analysis, KF has designed a framework for organising the two far ends of the chain under a common umbrella and facilitates direct link between producer groups and street vendors. The vision of the framework is ¨ Dignity and identity for all ¨ Connecting small and marginalised stakeholders to the mainstream market ¨ Improving livelihood and social status ¨ Creating livelihood opportunities ¨ Empowering vendors and growers for the new market challenges ¨ Better returns to growers and vendors
And the objectives of the framework includes the following points ¨ To connect vendors and marginalised growers to the mainstream of the society ¨ To provide platform and support to vendors and marginalised growers in the evolving economy ¨ To prepare vendors and marginalised growers for new market challenges ¨ Creating infrastructure ¨ Strengthening - Link between growers and vendors ¨ Reducing the operational cost and increasing the price realisation for the vendors & growers. ¨ Providing added benefits to the vendors & growers like insurance cover for family, free education to wards etc. |
